So. I got into surfing, like, before I really had a choice. One of my first memories consists of my bud and I running into each other on our dad’s longboards on this mini insider at T-mar. Our moms and sisters were on the beach and the dad’s pushed us into this wave sending there little ones, as any self-respecting parent should, into one foot oblivion. We plowed into each other ankles the parents were scared that their younglings be scared from surfing forever, but I remembered thinking then, boy this being in the water business is fun, toughens us up a lil bit, and if it can bring my friends and I closer then, “fuck yeah, I’m down,” (my adolescent thoughts would always cuss). Since then my life sort of just revolved around the water. Always welcoming and comfortable, it became this outlet that I could share with my friends and an arena we could grow in together, show up and learn something new. “Yoseph…You see that cutback, I almost hit the wash like those older guys.” That became life, for years. Strewn around with school, traveling to contests, and other sports. But my inner mind became focused on riding waves, (with some yoga and skating mixed in to better my surfing). Yes, that became my life, for years. Then, slowly, I began searching for other outlets of expression, so, naturally, I turned to the arts. Instinctively my attractions became focused on the expressive movements of two-dimensional colors and their shapes that I could compose into a fluid composition. A blue print of progression, I came to notice, of how your movements on a wave or on a canvas (if done correctly) will create a natural graceful whole, depending on the board you are riding or the colors you are manipulating. This thought defined the base for most of the art I create, some theories have come into play here and there (mostly at UCSB) just like experiments and techniques with different boards on different waves. But yes, they all naturally went together. And I enjoy them.
I also have become interested in the production of hydroponic vegetables. I feel, as with many others, that we as a society must push towards eating locally grown, healthy food at a high sustainability level. As we move into the future we need to conserve our resources and while eating quality, nutrient filled food. Check out sundial-farm.com.
At the moment, that’s life.: )
